Blue Jackets looking to trade

"Free agency has slowed to a crawl in its second week, and a handful of NHL general managers are digging in for a game of chicken. On one side we have GMs who desperately need salary cap room. On the other side are clubs -- like the Blue Jackets -- who are looking for a certain type of player.
The Blue Jackets need help on defense. The San Jose Sharks need cap relief. They are perfect examples of what has become the second stage of free agency since the dawn of the NHL's salary cap almost five years ago.
Earlier this offseason, Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson offered to trade forward Jason Chimera to the Sharks in exchange for defenseman Christian Ehrhoff.
Sharks GM Doug Wilson was not interested. Ehrhoff is a second-pair defenseman -- maybe a first-pair guy in Columbus -- and he can run a power play. Chimera has a rare combination of size and speed, but he's seen as a "plus" third-line left winger.
It makes sense that Wilson said no. But he might be forced to soften his stance on such trade offers as training camp winds down.
NHL rules require that all clubs be at or below the $56.8 million salary cap limit by opening night, and that's going to take some work for the Sharks.
The Sharks have only eight forwards under contract for 2009-10. They need a back-up goaltender, too. And yet they're only $1.34 million under the salary cap.
"I'm not in any hurry," Wilson said. "We've got plenty of time to be patient."
But something has to give. He must hope that the next two months -- leading up to training camp -- will bring a significant offer for one of his players, and, with it, cap relief.
Howson is waiting. Like other small market GMs, he's waited for this day, when other clubs' salary cap woes might force them to make trades they wouldn't otherwise consider.
Howson has talked to San Jose, Toronto (which has nine NHL defensemen on its roster) and others, possibly Carolina, Edmonton and Dallas, in his search for an offensive defenseman.
"For us to be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender, we have to improve our defense," Howson said. "We have to spend less time in our own zone and more time with the puck.
"We like our six defensemen. We have six guys right now who we could easily start the season with today. But, other than Kris Russell, the other five are a similar style of player."
Howson, like Wilson, is vowing patience. He's still snooping around the free agent market -- 39-year-old Sergei Zubov is a possibility -- but Howson said that he's willing to start the season with his current six defensemen -- Jan Hejda, Mike Commodore, Rostislav Klesla, Fedor Tyutin, Marc Methot and Russell.
"We could add a player during the season, or we could do it at the trade deadline," Howson said."

Espisito working hard dispite coming off an injury

"Angelo Esposito skates alone.
In a quiet and empty rink, well before 32 other Thrashers prospects take the ice, Esposito continues to rehabilitate the injured right knee that has stalled his professional hockey career.
The former first-round draft pick, called by some the prize of the Marian Hossa trade two years ago, is working out as best he can at the six-day Prospect Development Camp.
"I actually got out there before everyone for about 35 minutes on my own," Esposito said Friday. "I was just by myself. My trainer gave me some exercises and I did them."
Not yet six months after reconstructive knee surgery, the center will not do skating drills with the other prospects this weekend but will take part in conditioning exercises. Esposito and Thrashers general manager Don Waddell agree he is a month ahead of schedule in his rehab. Whether he will be ready for the start of training camp in September remains to be seen.
"He won't be ready for our rookie camp but he could compete in our training camp, or we'll push it back into the first week of October," Waddell said. "Initially they thought he would return in the middle of November but he should be close to being ready by the start of the season.
Esposito is thinking sooner than later.
"I'm expecting to be here for training camp and participate at my full level," the 20-year-old said. "I'm just going to come into training camp and do my best, work my hardest. If I make the team, that's great. Obviously, that's my goal."
Esposito's injury came at a time when he was finally starting to reach the lofty expectations pinned to him as the 20th pick in the 2007 draft by Pittsburgh. He made Canada's Junior Team - on his fourth try - and won a gold medal at the 2009 Junior World Championships. He had three goals and an assist in six games, scoring a goal in Canada's 5-1 win over Sweden in the title game."

Moen to habs

Habs have signed Moen to a 1 year contract.

Morrison to capitals

Once centered a dominate line called the west coast express in Vancouver, Brendon Morrison has signed a 1 year $1.5 million deal with the capitals.

Time to step up

"Patrick White has gone from the Vancouver Canucks' No. 1 pick in the 2007 NHL entry draft to No. 1 whipping boy when it comes to scrutinizing the club's draft history this decade.
Canucks fans see red every time David Perron's name is mentioned, as the St. Louis winger who's scored 28 NHL goals already and made the Blues right out of junior two seasons ago was selected one spot after White (26th overall) in 2007. Comparisons won't get any easier, as the Canucks' top pick last month, Jordan Schroeder at 22nd overall, is one of White's teammates at University of Minnesota. Schroeder, a dynamic centre, was one of the top scorers in points per game (1.29) in U.S. college hockey last season as a first-year player, finishing with a dazzling 13-27-40 in 32 games.
White, also a centre, had 7-8-15 in his second season with the Gophers on the heels of a 6-4-10 rookie season.
But is it fair to rag on White, who's here this week as part of the Canucks' five-day summer prospects camp?
He was projected by NHL Central Scouting as a second-rounder and surprised some onlookers when the Canucks, under then-GM Dave Nonis, picked the former Minnesota high school star so high.
Is he another blown first-rounder? Or is there still a chance he could one day wear the Orca on his chest?
The Canucks certainly haven't given up on White, particularly because he's still just 20 years old.
"He's still a young player," said Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman. "Different players develop at different rates."
Don Lucia, White's coach at University of Minnesota, also thinks the jury is still out on the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder.
"The biggest issue is he's got to learn to compete harder one on one," said Lucia. "He's a really nice kid, great student, comes from a wonderful family, but 'Mr. Nice Guy' has got to go away when he steps on the ice. When he learns to battle consistently he'll take a step as a player. That's been his struggle over two years. We've talked to him about it. He understands it." "

Oilers farm in Oklahoma

"Edmonton Oilers president and chief executive officer Patrick LaForge confirmed that the rumors were true. Sunday, LaForge told The Edmonton Journal and The Oklahoman that the NHL team has interest in placing its top farm club in Oklahoma City.
"Yes, we have an interest in Oklahoma City as a market," LaForge said.
A major step toward Oklahoma City landing the Oilers' Triple-A farm team, which would play in the American Hockey League beginning with the 2010-2011 season, might come Tuesday. The Oklahoma City city council is expected to vote on whether to accept the terms of a proposed lease with AHL Hockey Club, LLC.
"Of course, we wish them (AHL Hockey Club, LLC) luck and hope to do business with them - if and when they are legally clear and ready for entering into a negotiation," LaForge said. "I also hope we can get to that point soon because the 2010-11 AHL season is closer than we think."
Last week, Express Sports, which owns the Oklahoma City Blazers of the Central Hockey League, announced that the Double-A franchise would not play the 2009-2010 season. The announcement coincided with Express Sports filing paperwork to begin negotiations for a prospective AHL franchise. The letter of intent was between the city council and AHL Hockey Club, LLC."

Smyth not surprised about trade

"Like graffiti on a deserted factory building, Ryan Smyth could easily see the writing on the wall.
"Obviously, they wanted to move money, and I fit that criteria," Smyth said Saturday, one day after being traded by the Avalanche to the Los Angeles Kings for defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing and a fifth-round draft pick. "I'd heard the rumors, and usually when they're that strong, there's something to them."
Smyth thought the Avs would be the last team he ever played for when he signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract in 2007. It didn't turn out that way, not after a last-place finish in 2008-09 and the Avs in a rebuilding mode.
"They want to go younger and less expensive," Smyth said. "And I respect that. I have a lot of respect for Mr. (Stan) Kroenke and the Colorado organization."
Smyth has three more years on his deal, with a salary cap hit of $6.25 million. He waived his no-trade clause to go to the Kings, a team he believes is on the rise.
"There's some real good young players there. I'm excited to be part of their future," he said.
Bad luck, Smyth believes, played a large part in the Avalanche's lost season, one in which the team was last in the Western Conference in scoring (199) goals.

Coyotes want to keep it a secret

"Glendale is fighting in court to keep documents about negotiations over the Phoenix Coyotes secret.
City officials want the documents to remain confidential until they finish talks with a potential future team owner over use of city-owned Jobing.com Arena.
Glendale's attorney promised Thursday, though, that the city would make the documents public before the City Council voted on any new lease so that taxpayers could weigh in before the ink dried.
Deputy City Attorney Nicholas DiPiazza faced off in Maricopa Superior Court against the Goldwater Institute, which is suing Glendale for denying the conservative think tank's request for city documents related to Coyotes negotiations.
Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf's $148 million offer to buy the Coyotes hinges in part on reworking the arena lease agreement with the city. It is the only bid that would keep the team in Glendale.
The city says it would lose millions of dollars if the team left.
The institute is worried that Glendale could agree to a deal with Reinsdorf allowing the bankrupt Coyotes to pay lower rent, security fees or ticket revenues to the city. It fears Glendale taxpayers will be left on the hook for $180 million the city spent in 2003 to build the arena.
Goldwater won an aggressive court battle last year against Phoenix over so-called "public subsidies" to a mall developer.
Glendale officials maintain they would help a new team owner find ways to increase Coyotes revenue but wouldn't sacrifice the city's portion of the proceeds.
Nevertheless, revealing documents about ongoing negotiations could harm taxpayers' interests, DiPiazza argued.
"When people know what your cards are, it ruins the card game," he said.
"In the future everything will be made public," DiPiazza added. "We will be accountable."

Kessel will not be dealt to Leafs

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is not about to book Phil Kessel a flight to Toronto. Burke reported yesterday that a deal between the Leafs and the Boston Bruins, which would have seen Toronto defenceman Tomas Kaberle head to Boston for the high-scoring Kessel, is not on the table anymore, at least not at this point. In fact, Burke added that interest in Kaberle's services, once very high, has cooled down. Kessel, 21, is a restricted free agent, meaning that the Bruins can match any offer sheet he receives from other NHL clubs, and reportedly is looking for something in the neighbourhood of $5 million US.

Predators trying to earn more $$$

"In an effort to generate precious additional dollars, the Nashville Predators want to turn two club-level sections at Sommet Center into an exclusive area for "high net worth individuals" and others who could afford the $40,000-a-year minimum cost.
Several observers called the proposal a creative way to increase revenue for the hockey club, though it's not likely to save taxpayers much money.
But the Metro Sports Authority and other city officials want answers to several financial and legal questions. The idea of setting aside space for rich fans has raised questions as well.
"There's a general trend in pro sports to price people out of the market," sports authority Vice Chairman Steve North said when the Predators pitched the idea last month.
"There's a philosophical question we need to consider, not just, 'Will we make more money?' We have an obligation to the public."
Team officials said they would spend about $500,000 to renovate Sections 201 and 224, which now seat about 250 people at the end of the city-owned arena opposite the stage. The adjacent sections typically don't sell well, averaging 69 tickets for the 41 games in 2008-09, said Ed Lang, president of business operations.
In their place, the Predators would install about 130 seats in "a large suite with all the amenities one would expect in a private club," according to a document the organization prepared for the sports authority.
The perks would include food, beer and wine; flat-screen, high-definition TVs; "captains chair style seating"; a concierge; and valet parking. Guests would pay $20,000 per seat per year to attend at least 100 events, including games, concerts and other shows. They would be required to buy at least two seats in the area, known as "The Reserve at Sommet Center."
Lang said the arena's existing suites serve a similar purpose but are better suited to large organizations that can afford them and consistently fill the 16 seats. The Reserve would target small and mid-sized companies as well as affluent people."

"But the right diet, rest and muscle care help to prolong a career. Personally I am injury-free, I feel young at mind and pursue a lot of activities."Selanne contemplated retirement but has decided to play for one more season."The next season is without doubt my last. The Anaheim Ducks could be a possible new team for Koivu, who is an unrestricted free agent."The chemistry between us two has worked well on the national team. It would be interesting to see how our interacting would improve if we should play together on a daily basis," Selanne said.Selanne entered the NHL 1992 at age 22 with the Winnipeg Jets. Rick Nash signs extention with the blue jackets

Blue Jackets all-star winger Rick Nash has agreed in principle to a deal to stay in Columbus for an additional eight years, sources tell Sportsnet. It's believed to be worth up to $62 million. The new deal would kick in the fall of 2010 and have a cap hit of $7.8 million annually.

OVERPAYMENT

Championship Team

From the Province:

""If we're going to win the Cup, we need guys to take pay cuts. The way the salary cap is now, you really can't get what you're worth now if you want to win. Everybody in this locker-room knows that and for us to be a great team going forward, we're going to have to take a pay cut."
-- Ryan Kesler, The Province, March 18, 2009
In a passionate plea for a pragmatic approach to free agency last spring, Ryan Kesler was roasted throughout the NHL like a duck for his collective view on constructing a championship team. If everyone took a little less, reasoned the forward-thinking forward, it could add up to a lot of good for the Vancouver Canucks under the constraints of the salary cap.
At the time, Kesler was simply following the lead of teammate Alex Burrows, who hinted for a similar scenario after his four-year, $8 million US extension.
However, Kesler's comments were played out to the point where NHL Players' Association executive director Paul Kelly tried to ease the unrest by saying Kesler didn't mean to tell his teammates what to do.
Well, in the end, somebody listened.
Unrestricted free agents Henrik and Daniel Sedin left money on the table Wednesday in agreeing to identical five-year Canuck extensions at $6.1 million per season -- especially with Toronto general manager Brian Burke willing to sweeten the pot to $7 million each annually.
And when Roberto Luongo's contract extension is announced, he'll sacrifice some scratch for a better shot at the Stanley Cup. The fiscal restraint leaves the Canucks with 16 players under contract next season for $46.5 million and leaves general manager Mike Gillis with $10 million in flexibility.
